Quick Tips for Spring Lawn Care 3/25/2011 Tom Riley owner of Greenskeeper with Tips and Advice for Spring Lawn Care

CLEAN UP: Pick up any debris that’s accumulated on the lawn over the winter.
No need to overdue it. The lawn will clean up pretty well with the first cutting. Just get the branches and twigs and any leaves that may have piled up.

GET READY: Check the mower and edger now. You don’t want to
get caught needing a repair at the last minute. Sharpen the Mower Blade. A dull blade will "tear" and harm your grass.

Important! Don’t wait until the lawn gets too long to give it that first cut. Never cut more than 1/3 of the blade, and never cut too short. Cutting too low will starve the plant of food and stunt root growth. No lower than 3 inches. A yellow lawn in the spring means it was cut too short.

STOP TROUBLE: The summer Crabgrass will germinate as soon
as the ground temperature rises. Apply a pre- emergent right now.

WEEDS: Clearing the weeds from the lawn will make room for good grass. There
are lots of weeds out there, like Celandine and Onion Grass.

TROUBLE SPOTS?

With so much snow on the ground, for so long, there’s bound to be some scars.
Snow Mold may look bad right now, but not to worry. It’s mainly the tips of the blade that are affected and it’ll grow out and dissapear.  Some spots may look dead but will actually turn green a little later in the season. Muhlenbergia, while not a desirable plant in the lawn, is nonetheless a grass and will not be as noticeable in just a few weeks.
